Marking hazardous goods packages and creating new hazardous goods items in Carrier Connect

Learn the three basic steps for shipping hazardous goods with Carrier Connect: Mark the package, create new hazardous goods items, and assign the hazardous goods item to a package marked as containing hazardous goods.

Detailed process

  1. Select the carrier with which you wish to ship the hazardous goods (Package processing – Shipping orders – open existing or create new shipping order – Shipping options sheet – Carrier field group – Carrier).
  2. Determine the hazardous goods type in the package in which hazardous goods are to be transported (Packages and items sheet – Packages field group – open existing or create new package – Hazardous goods field group – Hazardous goods type).
  3. Refer to the table to learn which hazardous goods types are available and how you can transmit them from your host system via the API.

  4. Select a Packaging type and Q-value if the carrier supports this.
  5. Refer to the table to learn which packaging types and Q-values are available and how you can transmit them from your host system via the API.

  6. Save the package.

  • “Special substances” (hazardous goods item setting) is used when shipping biological substances, genetically modified organisms, lithium batteries, radioactive substances, and dry ice.
  • Hazardous goods packed in a package automatically take the hazardous goods type of the package unless they’ve already been assigned a separate hazardous goods type in the hazardous goods item. The hazardous goods type in the hazardous goods item is only supported for certain carriers. Contact AEB for details.
  • “Limited quantity (LQ)” comes from hazardous goods regulations and designates hazardous goods packed in limited quantities.
  • “Excepted quantity (EQ)” refers to hazardous goods that are excepted from certain ADR hazardous goods regulations during transport due to small packaging units or size.
  • “ORM-D (US-relevant)” is no longer valid.
  • Small quantity (US relevant): US DOT rules except “small quantities” of certain hazardous materials from many requirements of the Hazardous Materials Regulations. This is relevant only for the US.

  1. Create a new item or open an existing item (Packages and items sheet – Items field group).
  2. Switch to the Hazardous goods sheet, then click New to create a new hazardous goods item, where you can enter all the required hazardous goods information.
  3. Refer to the table to learn which hazardous goods information is especially important and how you can transmit this information from your host system via the API.

  4. Save the hazardous goods item.
