Option 2b: Generation and printing requested by host system
A host system requests document generation for the selected printer model (e.g. ZEBRA GX420d 203dpi) in Carrier Connect via an API call. Not only document generation, but also physical printing is managed by Carrier Connect.
PRINT is an asynchronous mode: The documents are not returned synchronously in the response to the API call. Instead, they’re sent to the AEB Service Agent on the workstation or to the AEB Cloud Device Service on the external print server, then printed out there.

Local decentralized use
How it works
For decentralized use at the workstation, install the AEB Service Agent on each workstation (client) where you wish to print so that the local label printers are available in Carrier Connect (see “Using the AEB Service Agent with installation” or “Using the AEB Service Agent without installation”).
You can use this option only if the print job agent has been started in Carrier Connect.
Start the print job agent on each workstation where you wish to print. Two options:
- Start it manually via the user interface of Carrier Connect (see “Activating the print job agent”).
- Or call Carrier Connect from your host system via the API using the openPrintClient function. A link to the print job agent is then returned to the host system. All that is required is for the host system to open the link.
Centralized use via print server
How it works
For centralized use on an external print server, use the AEB Cloud Device Service (see “Using the AEB Cloud Device Service”). Two options:
- Start Carrier Connect in your browser and navigate to your locally installed printer or print server printer. This requires the print job agent to be running on each workstation where you wish to print (see “Activating the print job agent”)
- Or initiate the print jobs automatically using a batch, then navigate to the printers installed on your print server. This option does not require starting Carrier Connect and the print job agent.
Requirements
- Stable network connection to print server
- Monitoring of services for cloud printing, etc.
- Firewall permission to access print server
- Remote maintenance access to the AEB Cloud Device Service
